Anyone been to the new Greenfield Grille? I believe it's 1/2 owned by the fellow owned China Gourmet, who recently sold that to his nephew or somesuch. I heard it's got a big menu and fancy new bar. But I'm still getting a vibe like it's designed for the same crowd that frequented (famous) Bills, which it replaced: generally older, long-time Greenfieldites who are often in attendance at Rotary/Elks/Masonic meetings. Could be wrong, but I'm afraid to go see.

BTW, the unfortunately named "Your Mother's Oven" (No! Your Mother's oven!) has yummy cakes. Andrea got one for her birthday. It was good, ehile not being over-sweet like the big grocery store style. They are attempting to expand their menu from pastries to other breakfast & lunch oriented stuff.  They're located where The Emerald Forest coffee shop used to be. I wish them well, especially since Greenfield's Market had become the only locally owned bakery in town since we lost Mirlings and that other place on Chapman Street. Oh, I really liked Mirlings too. Garlic Herb Cheese bread.....

I have been to the Greenfield Grille a couple of times now.  The food is fairly decent, although last time I was there, there was a couple sitting a couple tables back from us complaining that their food tasted bad (they had gotten some kind of seafood dish).  Burgers have been pretty good, depending on your mood.  The "Fried Cheddar Balls" or whatever they are called, I am pretty sure are not made from Cheddar.  They come in a pint glass and they are little nibblets that are super tasted, but pretty sure they are filled with mozzarella, not cheddar.

The building was purchased by the former owner of China Gourmet (which by the way seems to have gone WAY downhill since he sold it), and former president of Greenfield Savings Bank.  From my understanding they have put it into the hands of the owner of Winterland bar over on Hope St (although I could be wrong, would have to check news archives).  The bar is pretty big as it spans across two rooms, with a wide opening between them so the bartenders can go back and forth between each side.

The waitstaff leave a lot to be desired.  Last time I was there, the waitress kept neglecting to come over and check on us, came back twice because she couldn't remember exactly what we ordered.  Not to mention that one of the waitresses was babbling loudly with the bartender about, lets just say, things that should be discussed between adults in a much more private location.  I don't want to know if such-and-such hasn't got such-and-such in a long time.  Did I mention the place was fairly busy at the time this conversation went down and we were sitting about as far away from the bar as we could?  Yeah.  Fire the waitstaff.

I've only been into "Your Mother's Oven" once, not long after they opened.  Their selection was pretty drab and it looked like they were trying to use up the last of the coffee that was left over from Emerald City Cafe.  While the coffee was great, the prices on what little they had was through the roof.  I may have to give them a second go and see if they can impress me.

Oh, such sad tales. Oddly, my lastr trip to China Gourmet a week ago was less than impressive, but saved by a really attentive waiter.

As for YMO, the cake was reasonably priced. She may well have started up without a loan or enough capital. Might explain crazy prices for few selections. I can certainly believe that happens a lot. Unfortunately, it's hard for me to care too much about pastries and all that, so we'll see.

Now! Have you tried the Gill Store on Main Road in Gill? It's owned by one of the original partners who still own's the People's Pint. It's a little restaurant that's set up shop in what I think was a convenience store/town shop, and it's awesome in an earthy-crunchy sort of way. Perfect for a birthday dinner date if you like places liked The Green Emporium in Colrain. They have this scallop appetizer that's so freaking good. Supposedly, they intended to stay in business by providing really good delivery for NMH students, but they have always had full tables and bar every time we've been. The one time we were unimpressed was for breakfast/brunch. They choices were too pretty and not enough substance. But we look forward to going back for diiner there again soon. Closed Mondays.

Plus! Have you ever been to the Smithsonian down int Hadley or Whately area (I forget where)?  From the outside, (and inside for that matter) it looks like a very typical roadside bar, one step up from maybe even a dive. Then you see the menu and it will freak you out. Really good, really unique food. Not too fancy, but totally more than you think you're about to get.

Finally, I'm hoping Curtis' BBQ is still open up in Vermont. It's late in the season, but at least one more trip to the least sanitary, most delicious BBQ meal this side of the Mississppi is necessary.

Smithsonian is actually in the center of Hatfield. It's one of the best places to eat in the area. You certainly would never know it from looking at it.

Gill Store is really good. Not great, but really good. It's a little off the beaten path but Clarissa and I enjoyed our dinner there.

Speaking of Whately, I'm a big fan of the Whately Inn. It's pricey enough to be mainly a special occasion restaurant for us, but we do try to get out there as much as we can. Good beer and wine menu too.
